Well they say, What happens in Vegas! Stays in Vegas!! Well this is one trip I had been looking forward to for so many years. What better way to celebrate my 40th birthday (yep 40!!) than a trip to Vegas with my favorite guy. Yep my hubby!!! Neither one of us had ever gone so we promise to experience it for the first time with each other. We did a three day trip there, from Thursday to Sunday.
The weather was great as we took this trip last summer in June. Being from North Carolina we are all too familiar with extremely hot summers, however we found the weather nicer while in Vegas. They say due to the dry heat it’s not often times as hot as some may think. We were prepared for anything!!
Before our trip I did what I do best and that is plan an awesome flight and itinerary. My husband always teases me about having a trip itinerary but I see them as must haves. I like to be able to maximize my time and dollars when I’m traveling but more importantly Las Vegas is one of the places where it is pretty much required to plan ahead. Why??? Well to be able to do just about anything in Vegas it first needs to be booked in advance. So last thing you want is to do have your heart set on experiencing an attraction and when you get to it, it says it has no time slots available. So if you’ve never been and plan to one day go, please be aware of that.
So for this travel guide I will be providing some tips along the way I think will be helpful to you as you plan your trip. We flew over via a nonstop flight with Southwest Airlines and was able to find a great with an employee discount.
1.Where did we stay
So I decided early on I wanted to stay on the Las Vegas strip. I knew that meant the hotel rooms would be a tad bit pricier but for this trip I was willing to pay to a certain degree. After scouring through the vast amount of hotels, I decided to go with New York New York Las Vegas Hotel & Casino. This hotel is part of the MGM brand therefore you can utilize their MGM Mlife Rewards and I was able to utilize my employee discount. It shares a pedestrian bridge with MGM Grand Hotel and the Excalibur hotel for convenience. As you can see from the photo above the hotel really does evoke the world famous New York City Skyline, which includes a replica of the Statue of Liberty. In the hotel the casino is named after Time Square and while you’re walking around to all the indoor restaurants you will fill like you walking along Greenwich village.
TIP: Definitely check with you employer, who just may offer discounts to certain restaurant & hotel chains, airlines and car rentals.
2. What To Do
There is so much to see and do while in Las Vegas and it can all be a bit overwhelming so I had the idea once we got all checked in our hotel to do a sightseeing tour of the strip. That was the best idea I had as it gave us the opportunity to see exactly where everything was and how far it was from our hotel, therefore we could decide whether to travel by foot or by taxi if needed. So I immediately booked us on the Big Bus Hop on and Off Tour.
We booked this around 5PM in the day and unbeknownst to me that if you book after 5PM you can hop back on the next day for free to continue to tour. This was a blessing as we used that in order to travel downtown to Fremont Street the next day.
These were some of my favorite spots
Zumanity by Cirque du Soleil – This was a pleasant surprise and by far my husband’s favorite attraction of the trip. Zumanity is located in the New York New York hotel which we stayed meaning we could collect credits for the purchase of ticket as Mlife Reward Members. Let’s just say it is a cabaret-style show and not fitting for children at all for a reason, but best experienced with your significant other. The show displayed great costumes along with awesome performances. It pushed well passed the comedy with interaction with the audience and offered a lot of sensuality. If you are able to have an open mind, you will enjoy the show, however if you are known to be a prude and easily offended then this is probably not the show for you. I won’t give any details beyond that.
Fountains of Bellagio – This was the highlight of my trip and what I was most looking forward to seeing and experiencing. When you see things so many times via television and dream about one day seeing it for yourself and it was everything I wanted and more. We’d pass by the Bellagio hotel a few times our first and second day there and finally stopped on our third day and had a great time. While we there the fountain played to the tune of Bruno Mars, Uptown Funk!!! I was like a kid on Christmas watching the fountain show and it lived up to the hype. Your Vegas trip is incomplete if you haven’t experienced the fountain show. Loved it!!
Madame Tussauds – This wax museum is located at the Venetian hotel (which is an experience all on it’s own, the hotel is beyond gorgeous) in the Grand Canal Shoppes. We enjoyed taking pictures with all the celebrity wax figures. One of my favorites is the one with my husband and I along with Mr. Box Office himself, Will Smith.
Fremont Street Experience – This attraction has everything. Gambling at the historic Golden Nugget Hotel, SlotZilla Las Vegas Zip Line (requires your pay in advance for a time slot), the Fremont East District Experience (which have vibrant restaurants, bars and street performers, live music, the Vira Vision light show, etc.)
3. WHERE TO EAT
Tom’s Urban – located inside New York New York Hotel. This restaurant has something for everybody. I enjoyed their Lobster & Shrimp Mac & Cheese.
Shake Shack – located outside the New York New York hotel and is a great fast-food restaurant.
TAO Asian Bistro – This is a very notable restaurant and it lives up to its reputation. It’s a hot spot for celebrities dining in so you never who you just may see when you’re visiting. Please do note that this restaurant does a have strict Upscale-Casual dress code. This restaurant also doubles as a nightclub
Hershey’s Chocolate WORLD – located inside the New York New York Hotel. It’s a chocolate lover’s heaven. Hershey’s offer a large variety of treats, souvenirs and you can even customize your very own chocolate bar.
4. WHERE TO SHOP
Las Vegas South Premium Outlets –
Grand Canal Shoppes – It is an upscale shopping mall located inside the Venetian Hotel. This is also where the well known Venetian Gondola Rides are.
Fashion Show Mall – Located along the Las Vegas Strip and has over 250 stores.
Miracle Miles Shops – Located along the Las Vegas Strip and has over 170 stores.
Coca Cola Store – Located along the Las Vegas Strip and provides a plethora of branded merchandise and a unique and entertaining experience.
